For many years, I would not leave the house without mascara. That said, the quest for #lashesfordays can be fraught problems from flaky mascara, irritation, and allergies.⁣

One particularly horrific example dating back to the 1930’s occurred with a product called Lash Lure, an eyelash darkening treatment containing paraphenylenediamine (PPD). Sadly this poor woman suffered permanent damage to her vision which in part prompted the passage of the 1938 Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. ⁣

Sadly not much has happened to increase consumer protections since that time. PPD is still found commonly in hair dyes and is used in place of henna for temporary tattoos. Not only is it a common allergen but it has been linked to Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma, acute leukemia, and bladder cancer.⁣

The skin surrounding the eye is the thinnest in the body making it incredibly easy for anything placed there to be absorbed. Even small amounts of substances on our hands can transfer to our eye area causing allergic rashes around the eyes. ⁣

Switching to clean make up products that are paraben- and phthalate-free decreases levels of these hormone disrupting chemicals by up to 45% in only 3 days! ⁣

Lash extensions are another option but allergies and injury from the glue is relatively common (many contain formaldehyde). ⁣

Latisse and similar products containing prostaglandin analogues which can help lashes grow longer and thicker. The trade-off is that those with lighter colored eyes may see their irises turn brown as a side effect. ⁣

-Magnetic lashes! I love OpulenceMD since they were created by another doctor mom. I find that my dry eye is less problematic when I wear them. Super comfortable. No smudging. Complements are guaranteed. ⁣
-Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions. I ordered this one today! It has great reviews and my former favorite not clean mascara used similar tube technology. I love their social mission too! ⁣
-Beautycounter Volumizing or Lengthening Mascara. These one works best if you warm it up before applying. Take your pick on which applicator you prefer- hourglass or long and skinny. ⁣
